"Spadankadank:" An Album ReviewBy Justin Hill | RMSMC Updated: 10/21/11 2:03pm ![]() I’ve noticed that I have written an awful lot about ska music in my past columns; Les Patates Rats, Streetlight Manifesto, Reel Big Fish, and a few others. Well, I’m not done. What can I say? Ska is absolutely fantastic. I would like to focus this particular entry on a local band that I mentioned in this fall’s print edition of College Ave., Ska Skank Redemption. I was fortunate enough to meet a few of the members of the band for a cover story that appeared in the Collegian. We had some excellent conversations about superheroes and Start Trek over some coffee and Chipotle, and they gave me a copy of one of their recorded EP’s, “Spadankadank.” I’ve listened to this album so many times because it is a part of the “ska” playlist on my iPod and I would like to share it with all of you College Avenue readers out there. Going into the album I felt I more or less knew what to expect from a local band recording, as my old punk band had a few recorded songs. It’s hard for local bands to record at a quality that is equivalent to a CD you would just grab off the shelf. However, if you can listen past that to the actual music itself, it is really well done. I listen to a lot of different ska and rocksteady, and Ska Skank competes with them both musically and lyrically. Their horn players and guitarist are very talented. Lyrically, they discuss themes like coffee and Batman, which really hits home for me because, well, I absolutely love coffee and Batman. My only complaint, if I can even call it that, is the speed of the music. Their songs could be a bit faster. Some bands intentionally play slower on their albums so they can kick up the tempo at shows but, I have never seen Ska Skank live, so I cannot say if this was intentional. Mark Kinz, the trombone player for the band, said that they will be looking to record a more professional album early next year. I really look forward to it after hanging out with these guys and listening to their stuff. So like coffee, Batman and Star Trek, and you’re looking for a new favorite band, I highly suggest checking out Ska Skank Redemption on Facebook, as they do have some upcoming shows in the next few months. Published October 21, 2011 So Mr. Kyle Etges was surfing the net today, probably doing some online shopping, probably looking for a Kazon Raider to complete his collection of little Star Trek ships, and he came across this abomination: http://troubadoursmith.tumblr.com/ Somebody had leaked the newest recording of the coffee song!!! Unreleased, unmastered, and unbelievable!!! Well hell!! We could hunt this guy down, take his basement fortress by fire, and shut him down, but then we thought, it's actually a pretty cool song and we're giving the CD away for cheap or free anyway this Sunday at the Blast O Mat. So in that case, click the link above, play the song and enjoy the spoils of file-sharing war!! Even share it on your own blog, it's ok, this guy will get the brunt of our Ulrich-esque fury if that ever comes to fruition. Remember, you can get the whole CD THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 19TH AT THE BLAST O MAT, 2935 W. 7th Ave, Denver,CO 80204 Holy bad plumbing Batman, do you hear something dripping? Spike MetRadio got ahold of another new song and will be playing it on his show TOMORROW!!! Tune in to www.kmetradio.org from 4-6 MST to hear ANOTHER leaked song off of Spadankadank!! And check out his blog at Reverb Nation for interviews and concert photos! http://www.reverbnation.com/thrashtime WHO ARE YOU GUYS? When Ska Skank Redemption converged in late 2007, nobody could have guessed how the sound of seven diverse musicians might evolve. Three years later, the musical evidence has solidified their reputation as one of the most diverse bands in Colorado. From their early writing ventures in straight-ahead Ska/Punk, they have matured as musicians and as song writers, pulling heavy influence from Funk, Swing, Latin, Metal, and Jazz. A Ska Skank live show can match any Punk show in intensity, while blasting out sounds reminiscent of Earth Wind and Fire. Be it in a bar, club, theater, or basement, Ska Skank Redemption is the sweetest singing crowbar to the face you'll ever experience. Press: "Awesome!" -Amy Zaleski, River Front Times "Genius" -Kyle Ryan, The Onion AV Club "The level of creativity, musicianship, fun, and dead sexiness..... is enough to rouse this old man to dance..." -Kenny Workman "Awesome set! Good show!" -Spike, Met Radio
